Ericsson has released the latest version of its Packet Backbone Network (PBN), which provides mobile operators with a pre-tested and verified, carrier-class backbone with full 3G capabilities over a single, integrated IP or IP/ATM core infrastructure.
Ericsson's Mobile-PBN represents a truly converged datacom and telecom solution created from the unique knowledge that only an end-to-end mobile communications supplier can possess.
Mobile-PBN enables operators to offer new or expanded services - such as high quality mobile multimedia - in an extremely reliable and scalable way. It is especially designed for security; offering operators enhanced network protection, and improved billing, customer application and network integrity. The multi-layered security of Mobile-PBN is achieved using MPLS-based Virtual Private Networks
(VPNs) and advanced firewalls.
"Our Mobile-PBN is already a market leader, having been deployed in more than 20 countries worldwide. This latest version fully supports WCDMA and EDGE networks, making it the first solution to offer full support for 2G, 2.5G and 3G over a single, integrated backbone and this unique solution further strengthens our leadership position," says Joakim Walstam, Solutions Manager for Mobile-PBN at Ericsson.
Mobile-PBN is designed to efficiently handle the growth of mobile data, multimedia and voice traffic in a robust way with the proven reliability of telecom networks. Built to a modular, scalable architecture, it enables simple network expansion and the quick and straightforward addition of new network applications and access technologies, speeding time to market for new, revenue-earning services. The solution reduces network design and implementation costs, lowering operators operational and capital expenditure and offers telecom-grade Quality of Service (QoS) and reliability for the range of multimedia services including streaming services.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communication through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world. Read more at www.ericsson.com/press

About Ericsson's Packet Backbone Network Solutions
The Packet Backbone Network (PBN) is Ericsson's end-to-end multi-service backbone solution for next-generation public networks. PBN enables mobile and fixed network operators to offer profitable and differentiated services for mobile, enterprise and residential customers, facilitating network convergence and consolidation and consequently reducing both capital and operational costs significantly.
Mobile-PBN is the foundation upon which future "all-IP" services can be built. Two backbone solutions are offered - one based upon IP, and one based upon IP and ATM. Built to a modular, scalable architecture with packaged site solutions and functional building blocks, Mobile-PBN uses best-in-class, standards-compliant components from Ericsson and its partners (including leading products from Juniper Networks, Netscreen and Extreme Networks). Site configurations are pre-built, pre-wired, pre-configured and pre-tested prior to delivery as a whole.
