SUNNYVALE, CA – APRIL 14, 2004 – Spansion today announced that designers of mainstream mobile phones and portable electronics gained new weapons against malicious hackers, phone thieves and other high-tech criminals with the introduction of the Spansion S29PL family of Flash memory products. These 128-, 64- and 32-megabit devices, the industry’s fastest for 3-volt wireless systems, use market-leading 110-nanometer floating gate technology to provide the price-performance demanded for today’s mainstream mobile product designs. Spansion Flash memory products are manufactured by Spansion and available from AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Fujitsu (TSE:6702).
Advanced Sector Protection, available throughout the Spansion S29PL family, is the industry’s most robust Flash security feature set and the only one to feature password protection for everyday consumer products. Multiple layers of security help protect against tampering with unique identification numbers, access settings and other protected information while fending off viruses, worms and other network attacks.
“Software-only security schemes are often not enough to protect our customers’ critical program code and sensitive configuration information against sophisticated hardware-based attacks,” said Michael Van Buskirk, Chief Technology Officer for Spansion. “Advanced Sector Protection, a hardware-based security system now standard on most Spansion products at the 110-nanometer node, transforms Spansion Flash memory into a ‘fortress on a circuit board’ that helps prevent unauthorized users from altering or erasing protected program code and configuration information.”
“The S29PL family delivers price-performance leadership by combining our strong tradition of cost reduction with the high performance and advanced security features once required by only the most advanced mobile designs,” said Amir Mashkoori, group vice president and general manager of Spansion’s Wireless Business Unit. “We have sampled thousands of units to our customers, who can see immediate system-level improvement over existing designs. We expect this trend to continue as future generations of this product family exploit our density-doubling MirrorBit technology.”
Product Details
The Spansion S29PL family features the following common specifications:
- 55 ns random read times and 20 ns intra-page read times provide up to 95 megabytes/second (MB/s) read throughput within the eight-word page and 78 MB/s sustained sequential read throughput across the device.
- Simultaneous read-write architecture provides flexibility and streamlines coding for execute-in-place (XIP) applications.
- Advanced Sector Protection, a layered security system featuring a 64-bit password that guards against hackers, tuners, viruses and even erroneous code.
- Available multi-chip package (MCP)-compatible pinout simplifies circuit board layout by providing a predefined, common footprint for standalone and stacked-die products.
- Future migration paths to density-doubling MirrorBit technology exist to again boost price-performance.
The Spansion S29PL product family contains two distinct 128-megabit products: the standard Spansion S29PL127J and the specialized Spansion S29PL129J. The innovative S29PL129J product features dual “chip-enable” inputs that enable designers to use a single-chip 128-megabit solution on platforms otherwise limited to addressing 64 megabits of memory. The product provides the same industry-leading performance as the standard Spansion S29PL127J product while replacing two separate 64-megabit devices to save board space and cost.
Pricing and Product Schedule
The Spansion S29PL product family is in volume production of 128- and 64-megabit products, with 32-megabit products to follow. The 128-megabit, 64-megabit and 32-megabit devices are priced at $12.00, $7.00 and $4.00 each, respectively, in quantities of 10,000.
