Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, today (14 February
2003) announced the expansion of its GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) service
into the Asia-Pacific region, by connecting further operators within the
Vodafone Group.
Already one of the leading GRX providers in Europe, Cable & Wireless has
now connected 30 mobile operators directly to the GRX and links more than
90 mobile operators worldwide through interconnect agreements.
Operators can offer business and leisure travellers secure mobile access to
services such as email, corporate intranet access and soon MMS (Multimedia
Messaging Service) wherever they travel abroad by using the GRX service for
international connectivity.
Cable & Wireless is in discussions with several operators to begin
trialling international delivery of MMS messages in 2003 and expects to
make further announcements in the next quarter.
"International roaming is crucial for the rollout of mobile data services,
especially for business users who expect ubiquitous mobile access for data
services, just as they get currently for voice," said John Lewis, VP Mobile
Carrier Services, Cable & Wireless. "We have seen major increases in
traffic between certain operators as customers start adopting GPRS services
and expect traffic levels to rise significantly over the next year,
especially with the development of international MMS.
"MMS will be a major focus at this year's GSM World Congress and we are
already discussing international MMS trials with several operators."
Cable & Wireless GRX provides a high-capacity, dedicated IP network
reaching 70 countries to interconnect the GPRS networks of in-country
mobile operators. It offers the guaranteed service levels, security and
global reach required to underpin effective mobile data services.
Customers directly connected to the Cable & Wireless GRX include KPN Mobile, Mobistar, O2, Sonofon and Vodafone Group (14 subsidiaries and four affiliates).
